PAYMENTSAn initial, non-refundable deposit will be secured by the website operator on booking confirmation. Accepted credit cards are Visa and MasterCard (transaction fee of 1.75% applies).
The balance is payable directly to the supplier on arrival. Payments for extensions may be subject to an administration fee.
CANCELLATION
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges also apply:
For cancellations, 1 day’s rental will be charged if less than 4 days notice is given.
Normal terms and conditions of rental apply at all times. All rates include VAT & insurance and are subject to availability. Despite the purchase of insurance an excess will be charged for any vehicle damage. Insurance cover is for UK mainland only unless clearance is granted prior to rental. Rates include breakdown recovery.
DRIVERS
Drivers must be aged 23 years or over (standard upwards – 25 years or over) and possess a full category British driving licence for the type of vehicle rented. Overseas visitors must produce a valid domestic driving licence or an international driving permit accompanied by a passport. Drivers are required to have held a full, clean driving licence for a minimum of 12 months and have a clear insurance record. Certain endorsed licences may be accepted, please contact branch for details. An administrative charge will be made for any additional drivers. No person other than the renter or approved additional driver/drivers are permitted to drive the vehicle rented. Seatbelts must be worn at all times as required by law.
DRIVING LICENCE/IDENTIFICATION
Driving licences and two further forms of identification confirming address and signature must be provided. Please note renters with new style driving licences must provide both parts.
CAR RENTAL
Minimum rental period is 1 day. Mileage allowance: 1-3 days – 250 miles per day, 4 days plus – unlimited mileage. Mileage excess: economy and compact groups– 4p per mile midsize to family plus – 7p per mile, executive and people carriers – 10p per mile.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
We strongly recommend that clients ensure they take out the highest level of travel insurance. In many cases this will cover any losses incurred if you are forced to cancel your booking.
AIRPORT SECURITY CHARGE
Due to increased security measures at airports a charge of £5 will be added to all reservations for our airport locations.
RENTAL EXTENSIONS
Subject to availability rentals may be extended by contacting the rental office and arranging an extension during time of original rental, failure to do so will result in the vehicle being uninsured. Late payments for extensions may be subject to an administration fee.
VEHICLE AVAILABILITY
To avoid disappointment vehicles should be booked in advance. Models shown and all descriptions are for general guidance only and while every effort is made to comply with requirements we cannot guarantee a specific model. Please note that automatic and estate vehicles will incur an additional charge.

Arnold Clark reserve the right to refuse rental and to cancel bookings due to inclement weather and operational problems outwith their control. Arnold Clark also reserve the right to change terms and conditions without notice.
INSURANCE
The price of a rental from Arnold Clark is inclusive of insurance.
An excess charge will apply in the event of vehicle damage. However, an optional excess waiver payment may be purchased – please ask for details (subject to qualification at the branch).

Our Insurance covers
* Full repairs to Rental Vehicle (excluding excess).
* Third party liability unlimited (including passengers in hired vehicle).
* Theft of vehicle and accessories (excluding excess).
* Cover would default if the necessary security precautions were not implemented i.e. if the keys were left in the ignition or the radio front was left in the vehicle.
* We reserve the right to increase the excess with each incident.
* The standard excess is £500, however, a higher excess may be applied in certain circumstances.
Our insurance does not cover
* Theft of property within the vehicle.
* Driver of the hired vehicle's personal injury or loss of life (his own insurance would have to cover this).
Insurance Requirements
* All drivers must hold and produce a full category British Driving Licence for the type of vehicle hired and proof of their address. If a new style British driving licence is held, both parts must be shown.
* Overseas visitors must produce a valid Domestic Licence and/or International Driving Permit and valid passport.
* UK visitors must produce proof of address, e.g. utility account or bank statement.
* Licence/Permit must be valid for the current period of the rental and have been held for a minimum of 12 months.
* A licence may have a restriction to the number of seats on a vehicle, which the licence holder is entitled to drive. For most European countries this is 8 plus driver.
* Any penalty points should be notified.
Frequently Asked Questions
* How much do additional drivers cost?
There is a £15 charge for each additional driver. The maximum number of drivers on an agreement is 4.
* Does the price include insurance?
All prices quoted include Arnold Clark insurance which covers our vehicle, passengers and any third parties. It does not cover injury to the driver or damage to/theft of personal effects or goods. Further details are available on our Insurance page.
* Is there an insurance excess charge?
Yes. An excess will be charged for each incidence of damage. Excess amount is subject to driver qualification. Please see the Insurance page for further information. An optional excess waiver may be purchased at the time of collection (subject to driver qualification) to reduce the excess amount.
* Can I hire if I have penalty points on my licence?
We can only accept up to 6 penalty points within the last 5 years. If you are in any doubt please call to check before making a reservation.
* I passed my test in the last year, can I hire?
No, our insurance requires that drivers must have held a full driving licence for at least 1 year.
* Is there any age restriction when hiring a vehicle?
Drivers must be 23-24 years (up to standard group).
Drivers must be 25 or over for all other vehicle groups.
Drivers over 75 may be asked to provide medical proof that they are fit to drive and also proof of insurance. Drivers over 80 must provide medical proof that they are fit to drive and also cover the rental vehicle on their own insurance.
* Can I hire a Satellite Navigation system?
Yes, we offer Sat Nav systems from only £10 per day. Please request it on the extras page when making a reservation online.
* Can I choose the car/van model?
Vehicles may be booked by category only. Unless availability of a specific model has been formally confirmed Arnold Clark only guarantees the category reserved. Not all car groups and models may be available at all Arnold Clark locations.
* Do you offer driving lessons?
No, but we do hire out vehicles with dual controls so if you have a friend or relative over the age of 23 who has held a full licence for more than 3 years they can accompany you. Please note that no passengers may be carried in the dual control vehicle.
* Do you operate from within the major airports?
We service the following airports with off site locations - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee and Prestwick. All branches operate a shuttle bus to and from the branch. This service incurs a small charge.
* Can you supply vehicles with an automatic transmission?
Yes. We have a large selection of models please refer to the vehicles page for examples.
* What do I do in the event of a breakdown?
In the event of a breakdown, you will find an emergency roadside assistance number both on your keyfob and displayed on the inside of the windscreen.
* Do you supply child seats?
Yes, we have a supply of child seats available to rent. Please select the number of seats required in the booking process. There is an additional charge of £1 per day per seat.
Please note that it is a legal requirement for any child under 135cms (4ft 5in) and under 12 years of age to use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in a vehicle and we cannot guarantee availability of a seat if it has not been booked in advance.
* What documentation do I need to bring with me when hiring a vehicle?
To hire a vehicle, you must bring a valid drivers licence and proof of your address (acceptable documents include utility bills and bank or credit card statements issued within the last 3 months). Please note that drivers with a new style photocard licence must bring both parts.
Overseas visitors must produce a valid domestic driving licence accompanied by a passport.
* Can I take a rental vehicle to Europe?
European rentals are restricted to cars and can only be by prior arrangement. Customers are responsible for travel insurance costs and European breakdown recovery for the vehicle and passengers. Additional charges will apply. Please note that while vehicles may be taken to Northern Ireland they should not be taken over the border to Eire.
* Do you supply your vehicles with a full tank of fuel?
Our vehicles are all supplied full of fuel. Any fuel shortages will be charged at local pump prices along with a 10% refuelling surcharge.
* What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept payments by most major credit/debit cards, and by cheque. We also accept payments by Maestro and Delta. Please note if payment is made by cheque, Electron or Solo a separate credit/debit card number must be given at time of rental as security for any additional charges.
* What is the mileage allowance?
Cars
1-3 days: 250 miles per day free of charge.
4 days plus: unlimited mileage.
Excess Charges:
Up to Compact 5dr - 4p per mile.
Midsize to Family Plus - 7p per mile.
* Can I pick a vehicle up at one of your locations and drop it off at another?
Yes. We are quite happy to have a vehicle dropped off at a different car and van rental location from where it was hired. There will be an additional charge for this service. Please note this service is not available for vans.
* What are your normal opening hours?
Many of our locations are open 7 days a week. Please refer to the locations page for details.
* What time do your rentals start?
Rentals can start at any time during our opening hours and are based on a 24 hour period.
* Can you supply sightseeing information?
All of our locations have booklets containing information on local attractions and also information from Visit Scotland. You can also visit the Links page for more information on local attractions.
* Can I return the vehicle outwith your normal office hours?
Unfortunately, no. Due to the fact that the vehicle has to be inspected, you must return it during our normal hours of business, and hand the keys to a member of our staff. If you are leaving on a flight outwith our opening hours we can make arrangements for an airport drop off. Please request details at the time of collection (this service will incur an additional charge).
* My licence is at the DVLA to be updated, can I still hire?
Yes, but there will be a small charge as we need to call the DVLA when you arrive at the branch. Please bring 2 proof of address items with you.
* I am under 23 can I hire?
No, all drivers must be 23 or over to hire vehicles from Arnold Clark.
* I have booked with an airport location, what if my flight is delayed?
If possible please let us know as soon as you aware that your flight has been delayed. If you arrive after our office has closed please make your way to your accommodation and call us the following morning. We will arrange to collect you and bring you to our office to complete the paperwork.
* Is there a charger/power point for my Sat Nav system?
Most vehicles have a charge point for electronic devices (phone, sat nav, etc) but some of the smaller groups may not. We cannot guarantee a charge point.
* Do you accept pre-paid credit cards?
No, most of these cards are blocked if you try to use them for Car Rental. We require a standard credit/debit card to be shown at the time of rental in case of any additional charges.

When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 1.75% credit card charge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Car rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 25.00
To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
Refund Policy
We are committed to providing a quality service and aim for complete customer satisfaction. In the event of cancellation, any refunds or penalties are detailed in the terms and conditions of your selected vehicle that you are asked to read and accept at time of booking. In the event you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
